Alternative Education Program

The alternative education program includes GED instruction, academic tutoring, vocational training and placement, financial education and life skills assistance, with a focus progressing towards higher education and career goals. Youth in Rediscovery’s care can receive the level of support that is most appropriate for them. Youth typically come to Rediscovery with disrupted school histories that make traditional high school difficult for them. These youth often pursue their GED in our Alternative Education Program. For youth who are still in public school, this program provides additional support by working with their current school placement, educational advocacy and tutoring to assist in the youth’s successful continuation in the public school and progress toward graduation.

In addition to traditional education, the program helps youth with long-term life goals. To help them prepare for work, youth go through our special Service Placement Program (SPP). In this program, youth can learn how to write a resume, interview for jobs successfully, explore career options through paid employment or volunteer work, or investigate higher education options.

Another component of Rediscovery’s holistic approach to education is the Financial Literacy program. The program runs a series of workshops to teach youth basic financial literacy. In addition to attending workshops on topics such as creating a budget, understanding loans, wise credit use and financing higher education youth are responsible for the completion of a financial literacy checklist that puts classroom learning into action.
