About Us
The idea behind Rediscovery, Inc. came from our founder’s work with young men in the state prison system. Many of these young men had grown up in the foster care system and had never received instruction or learned basic independent living skills. This anecdotal evidence is now beginning to be corroborated by evidence nationally. On an annual basis, approximately 600 youth in Massachusetts and 20,000 nationally exit the foster care system and are at high risk for a host of negative outcomes:
- 67% of 18 year olds aging out of foster care have not passed the GED or obtained a diploma and 61% lack any job experience. Even when they find employment 62% have difficulty maintaining a job for at least a year.
- Three out of every 10 homeless individuals were once in the foster care system.
Rediscovery, Inc. was conceived as a means to change the outcomes for youth who are exiting the foster care system and incorporated as a non-profit in January 2001. Rediscovery operates five programs: Pre-Independent Living Group Home, Independent Living Program, Alternative Education Program, Clinical Program and Alumni Program.
