History

Rediscovery Inc. was founded on the belief that young men and women in the foster care system need opportunities to thrive as adults, and only through a holistic approach will their educational, clinical, and developmental needs be met.

Rediscovery Inc. incorporated as a non-profit in January 2001, with a focus on developing innovative residential, educational, vocational and clinical models to address the national crisis of ill-prepared youth transitioning into adult corrections and welfare systems. Beginning in February 2002, Rediscovery Inc. partnered with a larger non-profit, Communities for People, to start its first residential, group home program. This partnership afforded Rediscovery, Inc. the opportunity to capitalize on the extensive experience and infrastructure of a larger agency. While state support covers basic operational expenses, Rediscovery, Inc. needs private support to sustain the depth of its services, and consequently, retains separate non-profit status to maximize the flexibility by which it raises private funding through foundations, corporations and individual donors. In May 2009 Rediscovery moved to stand fully on its own as an agency and now functions wholly independently.

Rediscovery, Inc. uses a multi-pronged approach to serving the youth in its care. Rediscovery runs a continuum of residential services from Group Home to Independent Living to Stepping Out that allow youth to gradually gain more independence and responsibility as they grow. Rediscovery also provides its residents with educational and vocational support from the Alternative Education Program, as well as a comprehensive Clinical Care Program that includes therapy, psychopharmacology access and a men’s issues group. This wrap-around service model allows Rediscovery, Inc. to help youth in ways that traditional residential programs are not able. We strive to provide our youth with the foundation needed to succeed in life after leaving state custody. Rediscovery, Inc. also offers a comprehensive Alumni Program that allows all alumni to access services as they need them even after leaving Rediscovery, Inc. This connection to our alumni gives Rediscovery, Inc. important feedback about how our youth are doing after leaving Rediscovery, Inc. and how our programs can be improved over time to better prepare the youth we serve for self-sufficiency. In October 2009 Rediscovery began a new program, YouthHarbors to work with in-school unaccompanied homeless youth.
