Mission

Rediscovery, Inc. uses an integrated, wrap-around, continuum of residential, educational, vocational, and clinical services to prepare youth leaving state custody to thrive independently as adults, while simultaneously creating a support network that ensures client needs are addressed adequately. 

Key Accomplishments

• 72% of youth have either received a high school diploma or GED or are on track to do so before leaving care, compared with 33% average among youth aging out of foster care.
• 30% of youth are pursuing post-secondary education
• 96% of youth have gained employment experience while in our program, compared with 31% average among foster care youth
• 97% of youth are in permanent housing after leaving our program.  In California, one third of former foster care youth are homeless within one year of leaving care.
• Initial services provided by Rediscovery, Inc were approximately $475,000, expanded to an estimated $1.8 million for fiscal year 2007
• Started the only formalized alumni program in Massachusetts to date

 

Jacob: A Success Story

Jacob is one of Rediscovery, Inc.'s true success stories. Jacob came to Rediscovery Group Home from another, more restrictive group home in July ‘04. From the beginning, Jacob has been able to set goals and achieve them. Jacob states, “I've really learned how to fly on my own. Before coming here, I'd always been given things, never had to work for them. I never understood the value of patience and hard work.”

After working with the former Education Coordinator, Mark Stagno, for just a short time, he was able to pass his GED with flying colors. In addition, he has maintained employment for over a year at a popular shoe shore in a local mall. Jacob states, “I've learned how to maintain employment, interact with customers, and be social with my co-workers. I'm a part of a team.”

Since coming to Rediscovery, Inc., Jacob has positioned himself as a leader and recently moved to the Independent Living program. Jacob states, “I've learned to be more independent. If you want to make stuff happen, you've got to take initiative. People can be there to show you the path, but whether you take it is up to you.”

Jacob will be entering Bunker Hill Community College this fall. His plan is to receive an associate's degree in criminal justice, and transfer after two years to pursue his bachelor's degree. Jacob has far-reaching goals and plans for his future. “I'd like to be a police officer, and then pursue my law degree in my forties. I want to become a lawyer, then a judge, and then retire.” Jacob is well on his way to achieving his dreams.

Jason: A Success Story

Jason is a Rediscovery alumni. Although he has left the program he still credits Rediscovery with much of his success. In his own words:

“My name is Jason. I was a resident in Rediscovery House until July 2004. In that time I got my first job and obtained my GED. Although I have left the program, they are still active in helping me reach my goals. I'm currently in school full-time. Also, I have a full-time job. I'm working on getting my driver's license. I'm majoring in Human Services and planning on working with teenagers.”
